Description:
Abstract:
These are the timber stands for the entire Lewis & Clark National Forest. There are no stands included on private lands. The CFF administrative and private boundaries are included. There are plans to add CFF county boundaries and the 1:24,000 scale watershed boundaries to make compartment boundaries more accurate. This coverage will probably be updated once a year in the winter to include any timber activities, fire activities and/or stand redelineations. Please note that this coverage ONLY contains stand id, sub-compartment and compartment numbers. To retrieve any vegetation information, contact the Forest's Ecologist/Silviculturist at 406-791-7700.
Purpose:
For map display and analysis work. Also allows for connection to the oracle database to create other layers based on stand information.

Publication_Information:
Publication_Place: Reston, VA
Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey
Source_Scale_Denominator: 1:24,000
Type_of_Source_Media: stable-base material
Source_Contribution: Used as a base for drafting upon and digitizing from.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Stand boundaries were drafted by various district personnel throughout the years. It is unknown when the stand layer was first delineated. Changes were and have been made as needed.
Process_Date: Unknown
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
In the early 1990s, the Judith, Musselshell, and Kings Hill Ranger Districts redrafted thier stands onto blank mylar quads at a scale of 1:24,000 using 1:24,000 scale 7.5 minute USGS quadrangle maps as a base.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The mylar manuscripts from these 3 districts were sent to a contractor in Fort Collins, Colorado, for digitizing. The Contracting Officer Representative (COR) on this project was Ron Brohman of the Helena National Forest. It is unknown what program was used to create the electronic line work.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Once the digitized information was received from the contractor, the line work was edited, error checked and edge matched for each quadrangle by John Metrione, Bob Gliko, Mary Hagl and Lori Wollan.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The stand quadrangles were then MAPJOINed into one coverage. More error checks were performed to check for duplicate stand ids and other various errors. These errors were corrected by J. Metrione, B. Gliko, M. Hagl, and L. Wollan.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
In the mid 1990s, the Rocky Mountain Ranger Distict redrafted their stands layer onto blank mylar quadrangle maps at a scale of 1:24,000 using 1:24,000 scale 7.5 minute USGS quadrange maps as a base. These manuscripts were then scanned at the Regional Office in Missoula, Montana. The dpi for this scanning was not recorded.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Scott Miller, Tim Horn and Lori Wollan registered and rectified the stand quadrangle grid files for the Rocky Mountain Ranger District and made them into ArcInfo coverages.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Tim Horn, Scott Miller and Terina Hill edited, attributed, and error checked these stand quadrangles. The MAPJOIN command was then used to join these into one coverage. At this point, most polygons less than 1 acre were deleted. These small polygons were mostly caused by the scanning process.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The Rocky Mountain District stand coverage was MAPJOINed with the coverage created by the other 3 districts. Final error checks were performed.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The last error check was to connect to the oracle database to make sure all stand ids matched between oracle and the stand coverage.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Region subclasses were created using the regcomp.aml that was designed on the Flathead NF by Velia Diemert, and then refined by Kim Foiles of the RO. These region subclasses are COMP and SUBCOMP for compartments and subcompartments respectively.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Various timber sale units were added in the Little Belt Mountains area of this layer using the ARCINFO UPDATE command. These areas were edited and attributed by John Metrione and error checks were done by Lori Wollan.
Process_Date: 01/01/1999
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
GPSed Deadman-Sawmill timber sale units were added to this layer using ARCINFO UPDATE command. Editing and attributing was done by John Metrione and error checks were done by Lori Wollan. Most of the original GPS units were corrected by Rick Abt.

Process_Date: 01/08/2002
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
B. Gliko, J. Metrione, M. Gonzales, cleaned the stand layer to match with the forest ownership layer. There were places that a stand showed as pvt land when in fact was FS land and vice versa.
Process_Date: 05/08/2002
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The Kings Hill Ranger District (D7) stands were split into the Belt Creek RD (D3) and White Sulphur Springs RD (D7), this changing the compartment numbers to reflect this.
Process_Date: 06/01/2002
Process_Step:
